PICTURES THAT WERE NEVER PAINTED*
* Almost all of the artists to whom we attribute our images never painted gay subjects, although many were gay themselves. We show what they were not allowed to paint.

Gay Art in the Simeon Solomon style - Golden Kiss - The cloth slips
Their bodies glow like gold in the backlight. Laurel wreaths in their hair – as if they brought antiquity with them, that time when male love needed no justification. And they kiss. Two hands draw the other closer by the hips. The cloth slips. How enticingly beautiful, plump buttocks glisten. The door to lust seems open.
Marble columns, golden light – no dark room, no hiding place. A temple. Simeon Solomon painted rooms like these – the most significant gay artist of Victorian England, who clothed male love in saints and angelic youths, because he could not openly show it. We paint in his style and according to his genius – and show what he could never show. Victorian England arrested him in 1873 because he loved a man.
Solomon was no marginal figure. Rossetti admired him, Wilde adored him, the Royal Academy exhibited his work. Then his friends fell silent. The art world turned away. He died in a London workhouse in 1905 – alone, forgotten, impoverished.
Our picture gives back what was taken from him. When it hangs in your home, it shows what has always been true: that this desire is beautiful. That it always has been.
